Thankful This Thanksgiving

This is an excerpt from my weekly real estate newsletter. I’ve expanded upon it for my blog.

2020. What a year. To most this has been a very difficult and stressful year. Heck, to all it’s been that. I, annoying to most, am a glass half full person. Maybe it’s my distant understanding of stoicism that shapes my outlook on life but if I can’t control it then I don’t let it bother me. So that’s why this year hasn’t been all that bad. And in that spirit I want to share a few things I’m thankful for this holiday season, in no particular order.

The ability to work from home: outside of the health and safety, being able to work from home has been a gift. Our dog was diagnosed with bone cancer earlier this year followed by subsequent amputation. So the ability to work from home has been so special to look after him without the guilt of being on an airplane half way across the country.

The freedom to choose who I work with: either in my full-time role or being in real estate part-time, I have the freedom to choose who I work with. I think it’s probably more important to enjoy the people you work with more than the actual work itself. In my time time I’ve imported countless spreadsheets – not very fun – but the people I got do that with is what made it bearable.

The chance to slow down: if you knew me last year, you probably never saw me. I was on the road half the year traveling to client sites and putting out fires. My wife and I attended 11 weddings (8 before June). Busy is an understatement. This year forced a me to take a breath and see what’s really important.

What are you thankful for this year?
